SAGAS FROM THESTUDIO
On air, in the bar, on stage, and beyond
“Far more than a rock journalist and broadcaster, he is a storyteller of rare instinct and originality… stories told with flair, insight, and a sometimes dark, but always compelling sense of humour.”
A decade-and-a-half behind a Rock show mic has left stories far too good to keep to myself rattling around my brain. Interviews with legends from the likes of Helloween, Scorpions, Gillan, and MSG to name a few, and a large collection from the frostbitten world of Nordic Rock & Metal.
It's not just the interviews either. Backstage, on-stage, and definitely at the bar. But this isn't just about the bands. It's about the places they come from, the background, and the culture behind the sound.
The atmosphere that shapes the music, from frozen landscapes to curious venues, and a collection of bars. Along the way, you'll even find echoes of Norse mythology, and there is even time to have a delve into runes. Think of it less as an archive, more as a journey logbook.

“Roger Fauske is far more than a rock journalist and broadcaster: he is a storyteller of rare instinct and originality. His command of language is nothing short of remarkable, weaving sharp observation with a wit that is uniquely his own. Perhaps it’s his Norwegian heritage that lends his writing that slightly offbeat, often delightfully quirky edge, but whatever the source, it sets him apart from the crowd. When I set out on a series of one-man shows across the UK, I needed someone I could rely on to bring energy, timing, and intelligence to the stage. Roger was my first choice. This book captures that same presence, filled with stories from his broadcasting life, told with flair, insight, and a sometimes dark, but always compelling sense of humour. It’s an engaging, distinctive read, and one I wholeheartedly recommend.”

Rock Chronicles
Sagas from the Studio
Forged over fifteen years in the world of rock radio, this book is a collection of stories, interviews, and moments that go far beyond the studio. Some of the interviews are of covered, featuring a host of bands with household names, in a Rock household at any rate, and two of the finest voices in Rock, Micheal Kiske & Jørn Lande.
Built around a radio show mainly dedicated to Nordic rock and metal, with a heavy focus on Finland and Norway, these pages bring together conversations with artists, behind-the-scenes occasionally organised chaos, gig nights that didn't quite go to plan, album launches, fights with doors, R.I.P passes and brilliantly branded festival toilets.
Think of it less as an archive, more as a logbook. On air, in the bar, on stage, and beyond. Interviews and associated antics with musicians you know — and some brilliant bastards you don't. Read it.

What's Inside the Pages

In the Studio
Calmness & chaos in the studio, they just appeared whenever the mood took them. I seemingly had no say in the matter. Whether live or over a phone line didn’t seem to make much difference. Interviews & studio guests. Expect candid conversations, and a load of frank and honest interviews with musicians from Scorpions, Helloween, Magnum, Jørn Lande, Gillan, Michael Schenker Group, Bernie Torme, Rock Goddess, Quireboys, Y&T, and Blackfoot, to name a few, plus an astronaut who wants to move to Mars. Including a special guest presenter or two and the kind of shows that can’t be scripted.

Beyond the Studio
Gigs, bars, festivals, stages. I still mostly had no say over the calmness and chaos. Bars & backstage antics, gig nights that didn’t quite go to plan, album launches, fights with doors, falling off the back of a lorry, R.I.P passes, unscheduled stage appearances. More bars, and some more bars.

Nordic Lands
From Bergen to Oslo to Helsinki to Tallinn. The last two may be discombobulating linguistically, but not musically. Heavy Rock Rapture leans very heavily towards the Arctic North, so there is a sizeable contribution from the Nordic lands of Norway and Finland, with a trip to Estonia thrown in for good measure. Hear from the musicians and discover some of the places and environments that shape their music, and the drinking establishments that shape your ability to remember it all. Plus, a few encounters with Old Norse runes and the near-impossible task of pronouncing Finnish words.
From the Pages
Excerpts from the Book
“We were chatting casually between tracks when, without warning and with the gravitas of a man delivering a live television address, he offered the following nugget of wisdom for young gentlemen venturing into the sophisticated world of aftershave for the first time:
“You might think it’s a gentlemanly thing to do, but do not ever, ever put aftershave on your bollocks. It will burn. It will turn your eyes green, red, and amber.”
He paused, presumably to let the gravity of this sink in.
“Unless, of course, you like that kind of thing.”
The joys of live radio.”
An excerpt from the book
“Thomas, much like Arve, the other Audrey Horne guitarist, is rather proficient when it comes to consuming reasonably impressive quantities of alcohol while continuing to function like a normal human being. This is a talent I do possess, but not as proficiently. They can keep going long after I have gradually slithered sideways off my chair and disappeared beneath the table like a defeated sea creature.
As events unfolded, the prediction proved accurate. He kept going.
And, inevitably, I slithered.”
